Mercury completes 40,000+ EHS audits in 2021
Mercury completed over 40,000 Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Audits in 2021 as part of our overall safety strategy to constantly reduce our Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) and total recordable rates of incidents.
Included in this figure are 3,500+ Covid-19 audits which were undertaken as part of our efforts to drive home the importance of combating the spread of the virus.
We’ve refocused our staff through key events such as Mercury’s Safety Week and our ‘Finishing Strongly’ initiative where we asked our teams to reflect and focus on safety basics in the run up to the Christmas holidays period.
The audits encompassed a wide range of different areas including Weekly Compliance audits, Last Minute Risk Analyses (LMRAs), Environmental audits, High Risk Activities (HRAs) audits, Safety Management by Walking Around (SMBWAs) and Senior Management audits.
Michael O’Connor, Group EHS Director said: “Mercury utilises our detailed audit program to measure our ‘find it and fix it’ culture success rate across the group. These findings, both positive and negative are loaded on to BIM360 and all actions are tracked to safe closure. This data is then analysed via Power BI to give real time trends and focus topics that form the foundation of our safety meetings, whiteboards, toolbox talks, safety campaigns and SPA focus topics. Technological advances have increased the turn around time for our trending topics which allows Mercury to be more proactive than ever before in our goal of getting all of our people and supply-chain partners home safe every day.”
As part of Mercury’s ongoing digital transformation, our EHS department has embraced new technologies including innovative software which allows for onsite audit completion with photographic evidence embedded.
