Joanne Cluxton: Power of our people driving Mercury success
Joanne Cluxton, Group HR Director, was recently profiled by Irish Building Magazine as part of their Leaders in Construction series.
In this wide-ranging interview, Joanne spoke about the importance of attracting and developing people, working in an ever-changing industry, and about Mercury’s key diversity & inclusion milestones.
In line with our organisational growth, Joanne has witnessed significant evolution of the HR department during her career at Mercury. With this expansion, she highlights how the complexity and needs of our workforce have developed significantly over the years, with an ever-growing need to hire and develop the best people, as we continue to deliver for our clients throughout Europe.
Central to our continued success is succession planning and internal progression for our people. By providing additional training, learning programmes, travel opportunities, promotions and more, our employees feel valued and are better placed to complete industry-leading projects.
In addition, Joanne spoke in great detail about our diversity and inclusion milestones. We have significantly increased our number of female employees over the last few years, positioning ourselves at a level consistently above industry averages. Joanne revealed that we recorded 19% female promotion in 2021, compared to 15% for males. “We are proud of the milestones we have reached to date on our journey to address gender imbalances in the construction industry. Our commitment to equality is something we strive to instill in our working culture,” she states.
Joanne also specified how local knowledge gave Mercury the edge, helping our teams to achieve the incredible. To support this, our HR department maintains an international recruitment strategy, which contributed to the successful enrollment of almost 200 professionals across Europe, since the beginning of 2022.
“With over 40 different nationalities among our global teams, our diverse workforce gives us the cultural knowledge to enter new regions with confidence,” Joanne adds.
