Mercury celebrates EURO50 success in Germany
As the dust settles following a pulsating tournament, we are delighted to share that Mercury’s EURO50 was a resounding success!
Almost 500 players, spectators, and volunteers from across Mercury’s divisions and diverse regions, gathered in Frankfurt, Germany, as part of our efforts to celebrate our 50th year in business.
16 teams, representing 11 countries, played out an incredibly entertaining five-aside tournament at Eintracht Frankfurt Rugby Grounds, on Saturday 13th August.
Three teams from Germany, were joined by representatives from France, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Poland, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, England, and Ireland.
In honour of our founding fathers, two special pieces of silverware were up for grabs – the Frank O’Kane Cup, and the Joe Morgan Shield.
After 39 enthralling games, including a run out for Mercury’s two ‘Legends’ teams, the winner of the Frank O’Kane Cup was decided with a nail-biting penalty shootout.

This worthy conclusion was born after EURO50’s two standout teams, Ireland (2) and France, could not be separated following a 1-1 draw.
It was the Irish team that emerged victorious in the Frankfurt sunshine, signalling a close to a fantastic tournament.
The curtain-raiser to this game was the Joe Morgan Shield final, where Advanced Technology (2), claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Poland.
The Frank O’Kane Cup was presented by Eamonn O’Kane, Director, and son of Frank, while the Joe Morgan Shield was handed to the winning team by Eoin Vaughan, CEO.
EURO50 brought our people together and represents Mercury’s diversity and presence across Europe. While the tournament was settled in Frankfurt, the road to the finals began back in June, with a number of qualifying events taking place throughout our regions.
Frankfurt was selected as host city by our tournament steering committee due to the scale of Mercury’s operations in the area. With a number of active projects in Germany, this is a key region for us, where we employ over 300 direct staff members, and 2,000 subcontractors.
The focus for this initiative was to unite our people through sport, as we celebrate Mercury’s incredible journey and growth from 1972-2022. In addition, this event empowered our employees to network and develop relationships with their colleagues throughout the continent.
Well done to all teams who took part, and those who put in a considerable amount of time and effort to plan and organise this event.
