Mercury completes FRA17 – the first operational data centre on Digital Realty’s new campus in Frankfurt
Mercury, Europe’s leading provider of colocation data centre services, recently celebrated a significant milestone on Digital Realty’s new campus in Frankfurt with the successful completion and handover of FRA17.
This state-of-the-art data centre marks the first completed colocation facility among several cutting-edge buildings at Digital Park Fechenheim, signifying a significant milestone in the project.
Led by Brian Collins, Business Unit Lead for Mercury’s DCBS Division, Mercury was appointed as the prime contractor for this project in October 2021. Over the course of just 16 months, our dedicated team efficiently executed a range of CSA and MEP works, ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance were met.
FRA17 boasts an impressive 4,656 square metres of world-class white space and a total IT power capacity of 10.2MW, distributed across eight data halls.
As a testament to our strong partnership with Digital Realty, Mercury is also proud to be actively involved in the delivery of nearby FRA23 and FRA27 facilities on the same campus. Furthermore, we are collaborating with Digital Realty on the development of an additional campus situated in Hattersheim.
Delivering comprehensive CSA and MEP services
Mercury’s scope of works for FRA17 encompassed a comprehensive range of CSA and MEP services.
On the electrical side, we successfully completed site-wide installations, including two MV panels connected to a 10kV utility connection, as well as eight HV-ATS Distribution Panels powered by ten 10kV Generators. Additionally, we implemented all external lighting, lightning protection systems, and access control measures.
In terms of mechanical works, our skilled team oversaw the installation and management of hot and chilled water production systems, including 14 CGMs on the elevated roof platform, ventilation systems, and robust fire suppression setups within the data hall facilities.
Mercury’s expertise in CSA works was evident through the meticulous internal fit-out of offices and technical rooms, as well as the seamless execution of outdoor facilities and external works, such as service utilities, ducting, landscaping, roadworks, and the construction of a high-security fence.
A commitment to sustainable project delivery
FRA17 stands as a testament to Mercury’s unwavering dedication to sustainable project execution.
With the support of our client and supply chain, we achieved an impressive 99% diversion rate of construction waste from landfills, while all metal and steel waste underwent off-site recycling, giving them a new purpose.
Throughout the project, we embraced eco-friendly practices, including the use of a digital permitting system that reduced emissions by 1 kg CO2e per month. Furthermore, the deployment of fourteen electric MEWPS resulted in a monthly CO2e saving of 2,181.20 kg. Notably, we maintained an impeccable environmental record with zero incidents throughout the project’s duration.
Brian Collins, Business Unit Lead for Mercury’s Data Centres & Building Services division, expressed his pride in the achievement, stating, “The completion of the FRA17 data centre is a significant milestone for both Mercury and our client, Digital Realty. Our team navigated the complexities of this project and successfully delivered it within an impressive 16-month timeframe. This achievement underscores Mercury’s capability to efficiently and safely execute state-of-the-art data centre constructions while paying meticulous attention to detail. I am immensely proud of our team and our collective accomplishment.”
