Mercury commences work on Equinix’s BA2 data centre project in Mediterranean connectivity hub of Barcelona
Mercury, Europe’s leading data centre service provider, has commenced construction on the BA2 data centre project for Equinix in Barcelona, Spain. The new facility will serve as a strategic connection point for data transmissions between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, leveraging Barcelona’s pivotal role as the connectivity hub of the Mediterranean.
The 2,500 square metre BA2 facility is due to become operational in the first quarter of 2024, and marks Mercury’s first data centre project in Barcelona.
As we continue to build on our success in Spain, we are looking forward to delivering this two-phase project in collaboration with our local supply-chain and the Equinix team.
Barcelona is globally recognised as a home for innovation and technical expertise, attracting major technology companies and international organisations. This partnership exemplifies Mercury’s dedication to revolutionising the data centre market in Spain and throughout Europe.
Once completed, the new BA2 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre, located adjacent to Equinix’s existing BA1 site, will form a dense digital ecosystem, providing much-needed digital capacity in the historic city. The expansion will enable local businesses to grow and attract international businesses to Platform Equinix® in Barcelona.
As the general contractor, our scope of works includes all aspects of CSA, as well as MEP, and fire safety works. The construction schedule demands delivery and RFS for Data Hall, front of house, electrical rooms, chillers, and generators area by May 2024, requiring a detailed works programme and collaboration from all stakeholders.
