Mercury’s approach to achieving zero waste to landfill across Europe
Throughout Europe, Mercury has achieved zero waste going to landfill on projects in several countries including Ireland, the U.K., Italy, France, Netherlands, Poland, and Belgium. A concerted and considered approach to diverting waste from landfill has allowed us to realise positive results.
Earlier this year we were recognised by Ecovadis, the world’s largest corporate sustainability ratings platform, ranking in the top 25% of companies rated and obtaining a silver badge for our commitment to responsible business practices. Our efforts in the environment category were noted as a particular standout and a key facet of our environmental practices are responsible waste management approaches.
In collaboration with our clients, Mercury implements sustainable design and LEAN construction practices across our leading-edge projects. Such approaches assist towards a reduction in construction waste and CO2 emissions from materials, and the misuse and waste of raw materials.
We prioritise the use of modular, prefabricated, and off-site manufacturing as much as possible in order to deliver the vision of our clients with the environment in mind. With the LEED and BREEAM certification process in action on over fifty percent of our projects, we understand that responsible construction practices are key to addressing today’s urgent environmental challenges.
Utilising multiple waste streams on our projects, all sites have separate streams for different materials including wood, timber, cardboard, metal, plastic, and recyclable copper. Furthermore, a digital-first approach is prioritised across Mercury which aids our environmental progress. Our Smart Waste tracking system guarantees up-to-date reporting on CO2 emissions and waste-related data which means we can consistently update our approach to prioritise the prevention, reduction, and reuse of any excess materials.
Our commitment to waste management across our projects in all regions is a core element of our sustainability practices as we aim to inspire our industry towards generating a positive impact on our ecosystems.
