Shaping the future of data centre delivery: A day in the life of Construction Manager Alicia Garcia
Looking to the future has always been a core part of Alicia Garcia’s outlook on life. From childhood, she knew the construction industry was where she belonged, and since graduating as a Building Engineer a decade ago, has forged a formidable career on an international scale. Alicia set off on a journey across continents to build experience on projects in Doha, London, and Dublin, gaining more insight and further managerial experience every year. However, it was upon returning to her native Spain in 2023 that she found an opportunity with Mercury which allowed her to take her career to the next level.
Gaining skills while shaping the future
“I recognised that like myself, Mercury is committed to being the best and advancing the future of the sectors they operate in. I knew that for my own development, getting to lead a team on a data centre project would be a challenge, but could also allow me to become an expert in my field because the projects are complex and require working with the latest innovations and technologies.”

What does ensuring a leading-edge approach look like on a day-to-day basis for Alicia?
As Construction Manager her day usually commences with a morning site walk which involves EHS and coordination meetings with Mercury’s supply chain to outline the daily agenda. There are also regular check ins with the project’s various Package Leads to ensure the smooth running of operations. Her favourite part of the role is “how dynamic and productive it is” and the rewarding nature of being able to see progress being made in real time.
In her role Alicia has been able to significantly advance her skillset- “data centre construction is very different to anything else I had done previously” and she remarks that the speed of delivering the project has allowed her to “step up and feel assured that I’m working to the highest standards. On a Mercury project you are collaborating with experts every day and that empowers you to become your best self.” Alicia leads the project’s advanced production processes, collaborating with the wider team, and notes that building strong relationships is “intrinsic” to their success.
Embracing innovative perspectives to deliver the best results.
Alicia, who is understandably “delighted” to be back in Spain after almost a decade spent honing her craft abroad, says the support she’s received from Mercury has been “really encouraging.” Furthermore, she is empowered by the company’s dedication to creating more opportunities for women to make progress in the industry- “It has been great to see the wider business invest in nurturing the next generation of leaders and making it a priority for women to be a part of that. Having a greater range of perspectives on our projects helps us to develop better approaches and processes for delivery.”
What advice would Alicia give to women considering a career in construction? “Simply go for it, nothing beats the practical experience you get on a project. I would encourage more women to consider a career in engineering or construction, particularly with Mercury.” She continues, “There are so many opportunities for progression and change, from planning and design, to engineering and safety. It’s not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to finding a career in this sector.”
