Backing our people to achieve their vision: Mercury’s Leadership Development Programme

The bi-annual Leadership Development Programme has long been a career highlight for many Mercury employees. The aim of the programme is to empower mid-senior level employees from across the workforce through a 6-month long training programme largely focused on leadership topics, to enable succession within the company to more senior roles.

The programme runs every two years. For the 2024 iteration, 21 participants who represent a range of Mercury’s operations and group support functions have been nominated by their respective Managing Director or Director to take part in the programme.

Participants, who are based on Mercury projects across Europe, meet in person every few weeks to participate in a series of engaging training sessions, delivered by outside leadership experts, as well as several Mercury subject matter experts. Topics covered include organisational culture, leading in Mercury, decision making and safety, and team dynamics. The cohort have taken part in group and individual exercises on the topics as well as completing a dedicated learning path in the periods between in-person sessions.

Ahead of their graduation from the Leadership Development Programme in early 2025, participants have been divided into four sub-groups and will carry on the baton from four graduate groups who completed a special project as part of Mercury’s Graduate Programme earlier this year, by developing proposals for various internal projects to improve people development and organisational culture. The groups from the Leadership Programme have been tasked with creating implementation plans for each project which they will present early next year.

Commenting on the Programme, Learning and Development Manager Alan Reilly noted, “This programme has been a long-running success at Mercury and plays a pivotal role in ensuring that we continue to provide opportunities for education, development, and progression for our people throughout their careers. A chief priority for us is equipping our teams with the opportunities and tools to build long-lasting careers with Mercury. Both the training sessions and special group project work are practical endeavours which complement one another. Participants can apply lessons learned in each to their everyday roles as they enhance their leadership skills.”

Project Controls Lead, Kim O’Connor is taking part in the programme and commented, “The Leadership Development programme has taught me a lot so far. It’s provided us with the skills to effectively manage, communicate, and understand our teams as well as handling challenging situations. It’s a very engaging programme and has helped me become more confident and successful in my management position at Mercury, while giving me the chance to develop an enhanced vision for my role in the business going forward.”

Group Head of Procurement, Shay Kelly is also taking part in the programme and spoke positively of his experience, noting- “The programme gives participants the tools and skills to lead effectively and to influence people around you. It will help you to build your confidence, improve communication skills and drives strategic thinking. It’s also a great platform to build long lasting relationships with colleagues across Mercury.”
