Transforming project predictability: The success of Mercury’s Commissioning Digital Environment

At Mercury we go beyond the call of duty with a commitment to always deliver premium results for our clients. The Digital Edge team play a key role in driving a company-wide culture of innovation, which ensures we continue transcending industry norms and operating at the leading-edge.

The Digital Edge team work to provide impactful digital solutions for Mercury’s projects to ensure we meet the evolving needs of our clients with efficiency, across the Data Centre, Life Sciences and Semiconductor sectors. The team recently collaborated with Group Head of Commissioning Thomas White to build a bespoke digital commissioning environment which has been rolled out across all data centre projects in eight countries throughout 2024. The platform empowers teams to track commissioning deliverables in an efficient, organised digital cloud solution that has led to increased operational consistency and efficiency on projects across Europe.

The purpose of the Digital Commissioning Environment is to enhance Mercury’s commissioning approach. With Mercury’s continued expansion across Europe, delivering life changing advancements for the world’s leading corporations, as well as an evolution in client requirements and expectations for efficiency, Thomas identified the need for a robust, digital commissioning system and turned to the Digital Edge team for assistance.

Pioneering a leading-edge digital approach

The team began the process of building Mercury’s Commissioning Digital Environment by leveraging an existing relationship with Autodesk to house the bespoke platform within Autodesk Cloud Solutions alongside all other group functions. A first-of-its-kind integration within Autodesk Cloud Solutions, the system provides easy accessibility for project teams, being housed in an already-familiar location. Furthermore, utilising Autodesk marked significant savings in cost in comparison to building the platform through a new software vendor.

These processes were developed in collaboration with Mercury’s Business Applications team, as well as the Planning, Data and Analytics, and Safety and Quality teams.

A bespoke Power BI report is a crucial component of the system, providing key data measurements and insights related to Commissioning activities, as well as measuring the Planned vs Achieved dates for all assets. This ensures teams can make informed decisions at every step of the project, with access to up-to-date, relevant data points which will enhance trend insights and visibility and allow for improved efficiency and quality of deliverables. Senior business unit leaders are involved in regular reviews of the report to identify trending insights.

Collaborating to ensure consistency

“This project marks a significant achievement and was a masterclass in cross-company collaboration, coming together with Thomas, Digital Edge and the wider functions really showcases what’s possible when we collaborate to enhance our processes and approach,” says Graham Rooney, Group Digital Transformation Lead.

Thomas White, Group Head of Commissioning noted, “The Commissioning Digital Environment has been crucial to our success in ensuring teams across projects can deliver with efficiency while still meeting the highest quality of standards for our clients. As the industry evolves, expectations and requirements become more advanced, and this platform showcases Mercury’s ability to meet such evolutions with world-class, robust digital infrastructure to support our teams and the visions of our clients.”

The Commissioning Digital Environment was piloted on several projects, whichbefore a full roll out across data centre projects in eight countries. Teams were provided with a dedicated training pack to learn how to use the system and it’s widescale adoption means that data centre teams not only have a dedicated resource to track commissioning deliverables, but also fosters a culture of collaboration to ensure teams learn from one another to drive powerful results and deliver with efficiency for clients. The success of the platform is testament to the advanced potential in utilising a digital approach to drive innovation as well as the importance of in-house collaboration and embracing shared expertise to make strategic advancements.
