Mercury successfully delivers Equinix’s FR13 data centre, with impressive sustainability and EHS achievements

Mercury, Europe’s leading provider of data centre construction solutions, celebrated the completion and handover of Equinix’s FR13 data centre in Frankfurt. The project features highly energy-efficient operations in line with our client’s sustainability efforts. Located in our client’s Frankfurt North-East campus, this data centre is located in a strategic business hub for local and global businesses, serving key industries such as banking, commerce, and telecommunications.

FR13 covers 5,295 square metres of world-class white space and possesses a total IT power capacity of 7.75MWs, which is housed across two data halls over three floors. The Mercury team developed Stage 4 client design, delivering shell and core of the entire data centre and a state-of-the-art front of house facility, with a total internal floor area of approximately 9,540 metres squared.

FR13 has received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and will be powered by 100% renewable energy. The project boasts a unique combination of architectural façade finishes- Alucobond, Bris Soleil, and impressive living wall elements with over 17,000 individual plants, which showcases a commitment to sustainable living. The distinctive exterior incorporates planted trees, soft landscaping, a green roof and walls with a climbing plant system on two elevations, and five living wall segments. It also includes an economical irrigation system, which reduces excess water, encourages wildlife, and will offset the project’s carbon footprint.

Mercury was appointed as principal contractor. Over the course of the project, our dedicated and diverse team, hailing from 28 different countries, efficiently managed the installation of all critical equipment and executed the full range of CSA and MEP works, as well as commissioning of the project. The team ensured the vision of our client was delivered in line with the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance, through to handover. The project was delivered in line with Mercury’s “Finish Strong” quality campaign and our industry leading WorkSafe | HomeSafe campaign which ensured all project team members showcased a powerful dedication to our safety ethos, driving a strong finish. The relentless efforts paid off, with the team maintaining an AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) of 0.00.

Through the leadership of Rory O’Brien, Managing Director; Tony Haughton, Business Unit Lead; Serkan Tashkan, Operations Manager; and Ciaran Evans, Project Manager, FR13 was delivered by our Critical Data Infrastructure division. This marks another successful collaboration between Mercury and our valued client Equinix, who we continue to closely work with on a number of key projects throughout Europe.

Rory O’Brien, Managing Director for Critical Data Infrastructures division commented, “We are proud to have delivered this cutting-edge data centre for Equinix in Frankfurt. At Mercury, we consistently go beyond to meet the challenges of the ever-growing market and commit to always delivering to our clients’ requirements and vision.
