Mercury leverages OSM capabilities to deliver major Life Sciences facility in Denmark

Mercury is proud to be playing a key role in the delivery of a major biotechnology facility for a leading global Life Sciences client in Denmark.

Mercury’s Life Sciences team are working to deliver two mechanical packages on this project. Since commencing work in the Autumn of 2023, Mercury’s teams have leveraged 40+ years’ experience in Life Sciences project delivery, efficient offsite manufacturing (OSM) capabilities and powerful Front-End Engineering and Design services which together bring a precision and expertise to this complex project. Across the two packages of work, Mercury’s teams are in two manufacturing buildings and a central utility building on the facility, which is located north of Copenhagen, making up circa 30,000 metres of pipe across the two packages.

Work is ongoing and has involved production and installation of hygienic, carbon and stainless-steel pipework packages. Constructed at several specialist OSM Facilities, including Mercury’s dedicated in-house high purity fabrication facility located in Kildare, Ireland where a team of experienced welders work to construct key modules. Mercury’s OSM capabilities also extend to a robust, high-powered supply chain of further facilities that work in tandem, where project components are assembled on rack, pressure tested, insulated and quality inspected. This takes place prior to pipework modules being shipped to Denmark.

Cutting edge OSM capabilities

Mercury coordinates and oversees the entirety of the process, with modules arriving weekly in Denmark for on the ground installation, in line with the project schedule. With an increase in pharmaceutical work across Europe, Mercury was proud to recently mark the groundbreaking of a new €25 million specialist OSM facility in central Germany. The state-of-the-art facility will serve as an engineering hub, hosting a team of over 200 professionals delivering design, BIM, and value engineering services to support multinational clients, bolstering Mercury’s current OSM capabilities.

Mercury’s work on this biotechnology facility extended beyond module production and involved a range of site-based activities in Denmark, including mobilising an on-site delivery team to install and weld modules, in addition to utilising a supply chain of direct labour, and specialist subcontractors locally.

Robert O’Donovan, Operations Director of Life Sciences for Mercury noted the company’s advanced Front-End Engineering, Design, and BIM services as crucial, describing the work as “highly specialist and relentlessly innovative.” “With a strong focus on teamwork, we embrace digital innovations to drive our approach and develop strong relationships with our clients, meeting their needs with precision and efficiency.” He notes the importance of early engagement- “being involved and in dialogue with our clients from the project’s outset means we can develop a true understanding of their needs and lend our expertise to the project design to meet those requirements to the highest quality standards.”

Delivering through precision

As the project veers towards completion, Mercury’s exacting turnover process is structured to ensure all systems and facilities are fully operational upon handover. The process is thorough and involves several key phases including Pre-Commissioning, Commissioning, Qualification, Documentation and Validation, and Handover. It includes detailed planning and scheduling of the activities, engagement with all stakeholders to ensure alignment and smooth execution, risk management and implementing mitigation strategies, and conducting rigorous tests and verifications to confirm that systems meet the required standards and specifications. The extensive documentation and validation provide a clear audit trail and thorough testing and verification establish that systems operate efficiently from day one.

Mercury’s team is expected to complete work on the project in Q2 2025. The team’s highly collaborative approach will ensure that the project is finished with optimum solutions delivered across every element of work. 2025 is set to be a promising year of growth for the Life Sciences team as they continue to leverage expertise and local knowledge to build strong relationships, harnessing innovative solutions throughout the project life cycle to deliver with precision and consistency.
