Fire Protection at Mercury: specialist-led and client-driven
Mercury’s expert Fire Protection team has over 50 years of experience in the delivery of specialist fire protection services, such as the installation of Wet, Pre-Action, Dry, Deluge and Foam sprinkler systems, Gas suppression, High- and Low-Pressure mist systems and fire alarm systems.
Mercury has established a strong presence as a leader in delivering Fire Protection services in both Ireland and Europe. With work on several projects ongoing and more in development with global corporations across sectors including Data Centres, Life Sciences, and Semi-Conductor the Fire Protection business unit provides clients with leading edge technologies. The team works to deliver a host of complex systems including wet automatic sprinkler systems, fire suppression systems and gas suppression systems.
Director Christian Murphy notes “We have a solid team in place who have never been afraid of building on the success we’ve forged over the past 50 years to push forward and continually ensure we’re adopting the latest best practices and innovative technologies.” He continues, “we develop long-lasting relationships with our clients and deliver specialist systems through three distinct stages of high-quality work.” Mercury’s Fire Protection team lead the design, installation and commissioning of systems on projects, guaranteeing premium results at every stage, and with a proven track record “also offer a premium level of post-commissioning maintenance support and customer service to our clients.”
Leading edge design capabilities
Shane Flood joined Mercury over ten years ago and recently assumed the position of Fire Protection Design Manager. “Our in-house design teams create 2d and 3d designs for projects across different sectors and we also provide on-site and off-site fabrication of pipework systems.” He notes “our design team come from a variety of different backgrounds. Our high-quality approach is grounded in the different perspectives they bring.” The team’s work commences when they “come onboard right at the tender stage, to work to the exact specifications necessary and take a collaborative approach to guarantee we meet the clients’ needs.”
Mercury’s level 4 self-certifying standard positions the team strongly- “We don’t require a third-party to review our designs but we’re in constant collaboration and communication with our clients to meet exact specifications.” Shane notes that while “schedules can be demanding,” the rapid pace of development within the industry is exciting- “it’s an invigorating time, there have been a lot of developments which have enabled us to deliver more efficiently than ever before.” In 2024, Mercury’s Fire Protection team became the first sprinkler company in Ireland to achieve VdS approval. VdS is a European certification body specialising in fire protection. This approval showcases Mercury’s Fire Protection teams’ commitment to undertake projects in Europe and to support new and existing client’s evolving needs.
A dynamic installation process
After design of systems is complete, the team get working on the installation process. This involves setting-out and verification procedures which help ensure “a highly accurate installation.” Jaydeep Raiyani, Turnover Lead notes that using innovative technologies is essential- “For example the use of the total station tool helps to guarantee accuracy and reduces rework when installing systems. We abide by a dedication to getting it right the first time, and always aim to balance high quality with efficiency.” He notes “there is a lot of communication with our client at this stage. Our chief aim is ensuring all systems are installed as per specification, with no outstanding issues.”
Thorough Commissioning and Handover
The Fire Protection business unit team also ensure a robust commissioning and turnover process. Jaydeep continues- “It’s crucial to us that we test, verify and walk through the systems, with our subcontractor teams upon completion, and conduct multiple levels of inspection with a strong emphasis on documentation reviews before handover to the client.” This approach reflects Mercury’s companywide commitment to delivering to the highest standards.
With a strong team and multiple projects in motion, Mercury is energised by the opportunities that lie ahead. Christian Murphy comments “we’re ready to build on the groundwork we’ve laid and develop our works even further to win more projects. We now have a dedicated part of our team solely focused on Fire Protection work and growth on the continent, which positions us strongly to deliver even further.”
