Scope of the Role:
The Head of EHS is responsible for leading standards of environmental protection and health and safety within their remit at both an organisational and individual employee level. Reporting to the QEHS Director, the role supports a team of health and safety professionals including Business Unit HS Managers, HS Managers and HS Advisors and relies on close liaison with the Safety Management System Programme Manager
This person will work to ensure that Mercury delivers standards of excellence through both proactive and reactive engagement. Thus, ensuring best in class delivery, including standards and expectations and supporting the delivery of business wide EHS campaigns, programmes and initiatives.
You will be required to extensively travel to all operational sites across the relevant division and in all geographies. The ability to positively influence our site and BU leadership teams in the support of and drive for worldclass EHS standards and behaviours is a key attribute.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
- Delivers 'hands-on' help, support and assistance to all project, BU stakeholders and supply chain
- Develops and maintains strong networks throughout the business, communicating widely and appropriately, to build a positive EHS culture
- Validates the need for Alerts, Bulletins and other communication content and approves those prepared by others. Ensuring this communication is shared and communicated throughout the Business
- Engages with external bodies and industry/business sector groups aligned to 'EHS Strategy' and BU / Divisional needs
- Analyses and identifies the opportunities and risks arising from project, sector, client or country specific requirements and identifies any necessary improvement or more immediate actions.
- Analyses and identifies the opportunities and risks arising from current and future legal and regulatory requirements and identifies any necessary strategic or more immediate actions
- Analyses and identifies the opportunities and risks arising from potential new country entry and identifies any necessary strategic or more immediate actions
- Drives and prepares the Divisional EHS Strategy' on an annual basis
- Shares and contributes to the approval of the 'EHS Strategy' with Business Unit MDs
- Ensures that the 'EHS Strategy’ is shared and communicated
- Develops specific 'Contingency/Improvement/Action/Leadership Plans' to address new and emerging opportunities and risks
- Identifies continuous improvement opportunities to eliminate recurrence, potential or likelihood of risks
- Ensures relevant senior EHS staff are trained in accident investigation (AI) and the Hammertech platform.
- Ensures all those at senior divisional and leadership level who require notification are contacted within the required timeframes and that post event 24-hour leader sessions are convened.
- Ensures an independent and/or external Investigator is appointed where appropriate
- Ensures updates relating to significant events are communicated in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Oversees the AI process, assures root causes are correct and feeds back preventive close outs to avoid recurrence be it system, training or sharing lessons.
- Knows and understands the requirements of the ME standards and expectations
- Identifies the need for changes or improvements to the SMS through interaction with BU operational needs to enhance hazard avoidance and feedback to the 'Safety Management System'
- Supports the early identification, at procurement and mobilisation stages, of high-risk supply chain partners who require intervention to achieve our standards.
- Highlights gaps and proposes improvements to enhance our SMS whilst being conscious about waste, value and lean techniques.
- Identifies the need for changes through EHS innovations, lessons learned and legislative updates to the 'Safety Management System'
- Acts as a 'torchbearer' for the 'Safety Management System' and uses Lunch & Learns to cascade relevant SMS knowledge to new teams/staff.
- Coaches and motivates others in the effective implementation of the management systems
- Identifies the need for EHS programmes, campaigns and initiatives to derisk non-compliance and demonstrate improvement for consistency and serve worldclass standards.
- Oversees the implementation of EHS programmes, campaigns and initiatives for internal, supply chain and external stakeholder audiences
- Evaluates the effectiveness of EHS programmes, campaigns and initiatives
- Ensures that the output from EHS performance analysis at BU & Divisional level is addressed with appropriate ownership for satisfactory close out and lessons learned.
- Reviews and validates reported data and ensures it is correct and complete e.g. events, alerts, board reports etc.
- Proof and approve the accuracy and appropriateness for Divisional events, innovations, lessons learned etc for the ‘EHS Fortnightly Summary Report'
- Prepares, reviews and approves the 'EHS Divisional Report' and brings the key agenda items to the fore to enhance ownership, positive review and closure.
- Identifies, helps prepare and presents specific and relevant adhoc serious event and HRA / EHS Reports at BU & Divisional Level.
- Oversees the implementation of the monthly ‘Health Check' process in the division.
- Analysis, trends and presents for awareness and knowledge new and recurring trends collated from sources such as SORs, monthly health checks, quarterly audits.
- Approves the 'Internal EHS Audit Schedule' annually and shares with relevant stakeholders
- Oversees the implementation of the 'Internal EHS Audit' process ensuring value is added.
- Evaluates the value and effectiveness of the 'External EHS Audit' process
- Assists the work winning teams in the preparation of written responses required as part of the work winning process
- Represents the business in work winning dialogue including presentations, meetings and interviews
- Identifies, Captures and Shares best practice and innovation proactively to demonstrate expertise and competence to support work winning
- Identifies, Captures and Shares knowledge to improve standards, increase efficiencies and help others to make more informed decisions
- Acts as a medium for connecting people across the division and wider business and supply chain for the benefit of sharing knowledge in particular the BU HS Managers, Ops and Managing directors.
- Identifies and approves EHS training material for role defined needs
Essential Criteria for the Role:
- Min 2 years in a similar “HEAD OF” or similar role in a €500m + turnover business, 12+ years EHS occupational experience construction/engineering/petrochemical and / or within a multinational manufacturing or Pharma/Advanced Tech environment.
- Minimum Diploma or Degree in Occupational H&S, Construction / trade / engineering background and ideally some formal level of knowledge in environmental protection e, g, IEMA or similar.
- Accident Investigation, Negotiation & Influencing skills, Lifting / Crane Awareness, Live Energy Training, Temporary Works Awareness, Work at Height and Plant Awareness training.
- Experience in Microsoft packages, knowledge of EHS platforms such as DataScope, Hammertech, BIN 360, etc
- Willing to Travel
