Grace-Marie Quinn: ‘Speak with us at World Skills Ireland and see if an apprenticeship is for you!”
Come along this week and learn about apprenticeship opportunities with Mercury!
That’s the message from our team ahead of World Skills Ireland 2022, which takes place in the RDS, Dublin from September 13th-15th.
Several of Mercury’s most experienced electrical & mechanical apprentices will be present at this event and will offer their insights and advice to those seeking to learn about the abundance of career opportunities available through apprenticeships.
As one of the largest employers of mechanical & electrical apprentices in Ireland, we provide development, training and mentoring that is unparalleled in the marketplace. We invite interested parties to speak with us at World Skills 2022, where attendees can receive advice and hear from a variety of Mercury experts from across the business.
We are main sponsors of the Heroes Stage at this event. Joanne Cluxton, Group HR Director will take part in a number of panel discussions throughout the next three days, and our multi-disciplinary team are on hand to provide any advice and answer any questions related to apprenticeships at Mercury.
Ahead of World Skills Ireland 2022, Grace-Marie Quinn, a second-year electrical apprentice based on a semi-conductor project in Co. Kildare, Ireland, speaks about her experiences of undertaking an apprenticeship with Mercury.
What made you decide to pursue a career as an apprentice with Mercury?
“I had a few different options when I finished school, and completed a couple of other courses, but I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I took a year out and when I saw that Mercury was hiring, I applied straight away, an apprenticeship was something I was always interested in pursuing!”
What’s your favourite thing about working as a tradesperson?
“When I first started my apprenticeship, I was exposed to so many new and interesting things. Every day is a learning day, and no two days are the same. There is always a new challenge, and the work is very hands-on. I have gained so many skills that I never would have even considered.
What has been your experience of working in construction as a female?
“With construction typically considered a male-dominated industry, I did find it a little daunting as I first entered the sector. Thankfully, all of the guys I have worked alongside have made a big effort to make me feel included. It certainly has its challenges, but I don’t let them get to me and it’s great to see more women entering the sector – hopefully the numbers keep on growing. I would personally recommend this industry to any females who are considering it as a career option, particularly the electrical side.”
What advice would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
“I feel that I benefitted from taking some time out after my Leaving Certificate. Not everyone is the same, but if you are unsure of what career path you want to take, an electrical apprenticeship is one you should definitely consider. I’d say come along to World Skills Ireland 2022 and speak with the Mercury team. We have a big stand on the day and will provide any information that is asked of us.”
