Creating an empowered & supportive environment: Mercury launches LGBTQIA+ awareness training
Mercury is proud to unveil a new training programme aimed at raising awareness of sexual orientation in the workplace.
Launched to coincide with Pride celebrations on our projects throughout Europe, this initiative aims to foster an empowered and supportive environment where our employees feel safe to express their authentic selves in the workplace.
Pride month is celebrated by the LGBTQIA+ community and allies during the summer months. This commemoration provides a valuable opportunity for reflection, meaningful discussions, and collective action on important LGBTQIA+ issues. It also highlights the significance of embracing diversity in different sectors, including the construction industry.
Our comprehensive training programme aims to educate our employees on various aspects related to sexual orientation. It explains how the law protects LGBTQIA+ employees, jobseekers, and clients. By understanding what the Equality Act says about sexual orientation, our team will gain insights into why certain behaviours are inappropriate and offensive. They will also explore the types of prejudice that LGBTQIA+ people can face, promoting empathy and understanding.
The launch of this training programme is a significant step forward in fostering a culture of inclusion, support and respect. It reinforces our commitment to providing a safe and supportive workplace for all employees, allowing them to thrive and be their authentic selves. By equipping our diverse team of 3,500 employees from over 50 countries with the knowledge and awareness covered in the training, we aim to cultivate an environment where diversity is celebrated, innovation is stimulated, and the best possible results are delivered for our clients.
Christie Idemudia, HR Manager, further emphasised the initiative’s significance, commenting: “This training emphasizes how managers and leaders can create a culture of inclusiveness in their teams driving trust, openness, and engagement in the company. It also provides guidance on how we can all be strong allies, ensuring all employees irrespective of their sexual orientation have a sense of belonging in the workplace.”
Endorsing the initiative, Mercury’s CEO, Eoin Vaughan said, “I want to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge our LGBTQIA+ employees. At Mercury, we’ve witnessed first-hand the power of diversity and inclusion in our teams across Europe. It is essential to us that our people feel empowered and supported to be their best self at work, not just during Pride but always. This important training initiative is part of how we’re fostering a culture of belonging in our workplaces and wider industry.”
